Formula 1 driver Valtterri Bottas feature for 2022 in doubts with Mercedes. The Fin has had many successes with the German team, but over the last two years things have gone downhill between the two parties.
Bottas has scored just 74 points this season and and his performance hasn’t much helped his cause with his worst start to a Mercedes season, currently sitting fifth in the standings.
“Everyone knows how this sport works: if you have good results, then you deserve it [your steering wheel]. If you fail, if the team feels the need to replace drivers, then they can do it, It’s very simple as a sport.” Bottas said.
Bottas, is driving for Mercedes in his fifth season, and with the step into the new racing car era of the premier class in 2022.
If Bottas was indeed to be dropped by his current employers, his options regarding a seat for 2022 would be scarce to say the least, with many drivers having multi-year contracts. A return to his former racing team Williams would be an obvious solutions.
Mercedes boss Toto Wolf has informed George Russell’s management that the Brit will replace Bottas next season.
Russell has driven one race weekend for Mercedes at last year’s Sakhir Grand Prix when Hamilton was sidelined with COVID-19.
“When I discuss with Valtteri, I am transparent, and when I discuss with George, then I am very transparent, because I do not want that we have a secret agenda.” Wolff said.
“We have to look to the future.Valtteri has had some great weekends, but he’s also had some really bad ones, and they need to be kept to a minimum. Then we will make our decision.” Wolff added.
