Wayne Rooney, the top scorer in England’s selection history, announced on Wednesday his international retirement at the age of 31, after 119 appearances in the Three Lions jersey.
The striker, transferred this summer from Manchester United to Everton, will be able to focus on his current club, with he made a nice start in the Premier League with 2 goals in 2 matches.
Revelation of Euro 2004, the player does not enter the plans of the current coach. His last goal under England team will remain in the one registered in the striking elemination the England (1-2) in the eighth finals of the Euro 2016 by Iceland.
“It was great to have Gareth Southgate on the phone this week, he told me he wanted to take me back to England for the next games.” Rooney said on his personal website.
“I really appreciated. However, after a long reflection, I told Gareth that I had decided to take my international retreat for good. It was a really tough decision and I discussed it with my family, my coach in Eveton and my family.”
“Playing for England has always been special to me. Whenever I was selected as a single player or captain, it was a privilege and I thank everyone who helped me. But I think the time has come to put me on the side.” Rooney added.
Former the Red Devils striker will hope that a return to his home team Everton can prove a positive result after struggling his position at Old Trafford under Jose Mourinho.

“Leaving Manchester United was complicated, but now I know I made the right choice on my way back home to Everton.” Rooney said.
“Now I want to focus all my energy on helping the team to perform well. I will always be a passionate fan of the England team. One of my rare regrets in career is not having won a tournament with England.”
“I hope that the young and promising players called by Gareth will be able to achieve this and I hope that everyone will serve the collective. I hope that one day this dream will become reality and I look forward to attending as a fan,” he added.
Rooney made his debut for England team in 2003, aged 17-year-old, becoming the youngest player to play with the Three Lions.
