One year after fighting to a controversial draw, Saul “Canelo Alvarez” (50-1-2, 34 KOs) and Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (38-1-1, 34 KOs) were back in the ring for their highly-anticipated rematch on September 15, in T-Mobile Arena, and once again it went to the scorecards.
With the narrow win, Canelo is the new unified title holder, taking ownership of the WBC middleweight championships belt. The Mexican officially received his title on Monday at the Museo Soumaya in Mexico City.
Speaking to media, the World Boxing Council boss Mauricio Sulaiman was full of praise of the new WBC champion Canelo.
“Canelo shut a lot of mouths during his last fight. He is no longer criticised by those who say he is not moving forward. But in his last fight, he showed with his fists and being the aggressor that he is the best fighter. “Sulaiman said.
“Canelo is always the first to raise the Mexican flag after a victory by shouting Viva Mexico! I’m so proud of the fact that he represents the WBC again.
“This day is very special because today we recognise a champion who has dedicated his life to boxing and who has raised his country to a high level. He is a young man who does not forget his origins and is an inspiration to many young people.
“His fight with Gennady Golovkin from which he won the belts was one of the best fights in boxing history.” Sulaiman added.

Canelo suspended six months for positive drug tests for clenbuterol in February. The Suspension was part of an adjudication agreement set by NAC. However, Sulaiman believes the boxer is innocent.
“In a superficial way, as far as we know about clenbuterol, because of the level found and with the clean record of Canelo, who has been a part of the program of the VADA for four years and had never tested positive, and considering that the problem of clenbuterol is a public health issue, everything indicates that it is a food contamination.” Sulaiman said.
Canelo will be putting his WBC and WBA belts on the line against Rocky Fielding when they meet on December 15 at the Madison Square Garden, in New York City.
