Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Newcastle United at Anfield further strengthened their position at the top of the Premier League. Arne Slot’s side are now 13 points clear of second-placed Arsenal, opening up a huge opportunity for them to win a 20th league title in the club’s history.
With just 10 league games left this season – one fewer than Arsenal – Liverpool now have a 98.8 per cent chance of winning the Premier League, according to Opta. However, Slot refused to speculate on the title, preferring to focus on their Champions League last-16 tie against Paris Saint-Germain, which takes place at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday, March 5.
“I don’t know because I don’t think about that,” said the Dutchman. “I thought about PSG and watched them against Manchester City. I was impressed with their quality, they are in good form, they haven’t lost for a long time.”
If Arsenal suffer a poor run of form by losing their next four games against Manchester United (away), Chelsea (home), Fulham (home) and Everton (away).
Then Liverpool win their three games against Southampton (home), Everton (home) and Fulham (away), then the Reds can secure the title when they travel to Craven Cottage on the weekend of April 5-6.
If the points gap remains the same
If Liverpool and Arsenal continue to win and the 13-point gap remains, then the Reds can lift the Premier League trophy when they face Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield on the weekend of April 26-27.
If Arsenal win the postponed game
Arsenal have one more game than Liverpool, namely the game against Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium on March 16.
If they win that game and continue to achieve similar results to Liverpool, then Slot’s team can only secure the title at Stamford Bridge on the weekend of May 3-4, as they did in 1986.
Can Liverpool win the title when they host Arsenal?
That is a possibility, depending on previous results. If Liverpool go into Anfield on May 9-10 with a seven-point lead with just two games remaining, then the Reds could celebrate the title in front of their main rivals this season.
