Liverpool won 2-0 over Newcastle United in the 27th week of the Premier League at Anfield Stadium, Thursday (26/2/2025) local time.
This result made Liverpool increase the points difference with their closest rivals Arsenal who are in 2nd place in the Premier League title race. This is because the Gunners only played a goalless draw at Nottingham Forest’s headquarters.
Liverpool are now at the top of the standings with 67 points. The Reds are 13 points ahead of Arsenal who are in second place in the standings.
The home team, who were not accompanied by coach Arne Slot because he was sanctioned, opened the scoring when the match had only been going on for 11 minutes. The goal was scored by Hungarian midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai.
Szoboszlai’s shot from inside the penalty box after receiving a pass from Luis Diaz managed to break into Nick Pope’s goal.
Liverpool were not immediately able to freely dominate the game after Szoboszlai’s goal. The Magpies played hard to match Liverpool’s game.
The clash between the two teams was tough. This is what made Liverpool only able to increase their lead in the second half.
The Reds were able to lead 2-0 through a goal scored by Alexis Mac Allister. He did not waste a close-range pass given by Mohamed Salah.
Even though they were already leading 2-0, Liverpool continued to try to score additional goals. However, this effort did not produce results and the score of 2-0 for Liverpool’s victory over Newcastle did not change until the referee blew the long whistle.
With 10 matches remaining this season, Liverpool’s chances of winning the Premier League are said to have reached 98.7 percent.
Referring to Opta Analyst through a super computer simulation, Liverpool’s chances of becoming runners-up are only 1.3 percent.
This prediction is in contrast to Arsenal who failed to win in the last two matches. The Gunners’ chances of winning the Premier League this season are only 1.3 percent. Meanwhile, Arsenal’s chances of becoming runners-up are 89.3 percent.
