3 Indonesian Representatives Who Remain in Badminton Tokyo Olympics

Indonesia can still have hope in the three representatives of Indonesia who will continue to advance in the badminton sport at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Badminton is one of Indonesia’s leading sports in every Olympic event. Since the 1992 Olympics, the Indonesian Badminton Team has often contributed gold medals, with the exception of the 2012 London Olympics.

On this occasion, Indonesia can still save the hope of a gold medal for the three remaining representatives.

Here are the three Indonesian representatives who are defending the current Olympic badminton:

1. Anthony Ginting

Anthony Ginting managed to set foot into the quarter-finals of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. In the duel against Kanta Tsuneyama, Ginting won with a score of 21-18, 21-14.

In the match against Tsuneyama, Ginting successfully showed the best level of play. He demonstrated rallies with various attacks through smashes, dropshots, and attack lobs.

Ginting really made Tsuneyama unable to get out of the pressure throughout the fight.

After qualifying for the quarter-finals, Ginting will meet Anders Antonsen from Denmark.

Based on the meeting record, quoted from tournamentsoftware, Ginting always wins. The last meeting against Antonsen was at the Indonesia Masters 2020 when Ginting won 17-21, 21-15, 21-9 and became the champion of the tournament.

The last time the men’s singles awarded Indonesia a medal was at the 2004 Athens Olympics by winning 1 gold (Taufik Hidayat) and 1 bronze (Sony Dwi Kuncoro).

2. Mohammad Ahsan/Hendra Setiawan

Mohammad Ahsan/Hendra Setiawan have set foot in the semifinals of the men’s doubles badminton at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

After setting foot into the semifinals, Ahsan/Hendra will meet Lee Yang/Wang Chi Lin from Taiwan. From the meeting record, Ahsan / Hendra lead 6-4.

However, referring to the latest trends, Lee/Wang are a double to watch out for because they have only lost once in 2021.

Ahsan/Hendra will be the focus of Indonesia to win gold in the men’s doubles number. Ahsan/Hendra will be assisted by their experience and flying hours at the Olympics.

For Ahsan and Hendra, the 2020 Tokyo Olympics are the third Olympics in their careers as a couple.

3. Greysia Polii/Apriyani Rahayu

Greysia Polii/Apriyani Rahayu successfully performed impressively at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. After being able to win Group A, Greysia/Apriyani managed to overtake the Chinese representatives, Du Yue/Li Yin Hui in the quarter-finals.

Greysia/Apriyani also made history as the first Indonesian women’s doubles to qualify for the Olympic semifinals.

In the semifinals, Greysia/Apriyani will meet Lee So Hee/Shin Seung Chan. From the meeting record, Greysia/Apriyani lead 5-2.

After setting foot in the semifinals, Greysia/Apriyani did not want to lose focus.

“Since coming to Japan, we only think we want to do our best and do our best. Never think about being the first women’s doubles to qualify for the Olympic semifinals or get an Olympic medal.”

“Thoughts like this are what we try to dispel so that we don’t get carried away with it,” said Greysia, quoted from NOC Indonesia.
