5 Hidden Facts about Real Madrid’s New Defender, Ferland Mendy

Another new player landed at Real Madrid. He is Ferland Mendy. The announcement of the transfer of the French national team left back appeared on El Real’s official social media on Thursday (06/13/2019). MEndy will join Los Vikingos effective 1 July 2019.

Real Madrid bring in the fifth player on the 2019 summer exchange with Ferland Mendy from Olympique Lyon. He came after Rodrygo, Eder Militao, Luka Jovic and Eden Hazard.

The cost of the transfer is believed to be 48 million euros.

Maybe there are some from the porters who don’t know Mendy.

Well, here are five facts that you might not know about Madrid’s latest left back.

1. SAME ‘ACADEMY’ WITH PAUL POGBA

Mendy was a graduate of the Le Havre academy, just like Paul Pogba. He joined when he was 18 or in 2013. From there, Mendy advanced his career by joining Lyon in 2017.

2. BRINGING FROM THE STRIKER

Although now known as a wing defender, in fact Mendy is a former striker. The Senegalese man started the journey as an attacker when studying at Ecquevilly EFC.

Mendy began transforming into a left back after joining the Paris Saint-Germain academy in 2004.

3. INJURY AND WHEEL CHAIR

At the age of 14 years old, Mendy was forced to pause from football because of a serious hip injury. The problem forced him to sit in a wheelchair. It took six months for Mendy to recover.

4. APPEAR THREE TIMES IN THE NATIONAL TEAM

Mendy’s slick performance in Lyon managed to attract the attention of French coach Didier Deschamps. The 24 years old player made his debut in a trial match against Uruguay, 20 November 2018. The coach’s tweet on Ferland Mendy :

“Ferland has a spectacular growth, he was in Ligue 2 two years ago and he will be at Real Madrid. He has both feet, with us he has been good every time he had to play. 100% Done deal.”

Until now, the figure of 178 cm post has collected three stamp with Les Bleus.

5. BAD COOK

Mendy’s talent was indeed in the field, not in the kitchen. “He is a bad cook,” said Mendy’s cousin, Marc Gomis. “Mendy can make pasta, but I think his talent is somewhere else,” Gomis added.
