A number of top European clubs refuse to join the European Super League. So far, seven clubs are reluctant to form a coalition in the Super League.
On Sunday (18/4), 12 clubs from three European Top Leagues: Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Manchester United, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, AC Milan, Inter Milan and Juventus.
Despite being formed by big clubs, not all clubs in the Blue Continent have shown a positive response and are interested in joining the European Super League.
Followed by the Liverpool Echo, apart from refusal by other clubs, he also criticized the idea of the Super League, such as: Benfica, Valencia and Borussia Dortmund. Ajax Amsterdam CEO Edwin van der Sar is also reportedly loyal to UEFA.
7 clubs that refused to enter the European Super League:
1. Borussia Dortmund
Dortmund CEP Hans-Joachim Watzke said he agreed with the European Club Association’s (ECA) view of the European Super League as a breakaway league. In contrast, Dortmund supported UEFA’s Champions League reforms and was in line with the ECA’s stance.
2. Bayern Munich
Munich coach Hansi Flick has opposed the plans for the new league and said the Super League would not be of any use to football.
So far, Munich has not issued an official statement. However, Munich chairman Karl Heinz Rummenigge will reportedly replace Andrea Agnelli from Juventus on the UEFA Executive Committee.
3. Zenit St. Petersburg
Reports from Russia claim that Zenit was also approached to join as the founding club of the European Super League, but they chose to refuse.
One of the factors that made Zenit reject the Super League was Gazprom, who became their sponsor as well as the Champions League sponsor for several years.
4. FC Porto
Porto were previously rumored to be one of the three teams that will follow as the ‘founding club’ of the European Super League. However, Porto President Nuno Pinto da Costa said they had not joined the Super League.
“We cannot participate in anything that is against the rules. We are in the Champions League, and we hope to continue there for many years,” said Da Costa.
5. Paris Saint-Germain
PSG is rumored to remain loyal to UEFA, especially President Aleksander Ceferin. Les Parisien is also claimed to be against the idea of competition which is limited to a certain number.
Another factor, PSG’s ownership of Qatari businessmen wants to keep getting support from FIFA ahead of the 2022 World Cup.
In addition, PSG President Nasser Al-Khelaifi who also represents beIN Sports, the owner of the Champions League broadcast rights, does not want his business to be affected by joining the Super League.
6. RB Leipzig
Leipzig is another German club that has been linked with the European Super League. It’s just that, Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff is the one who condemned the league led by Florentino Perez.
“We are supporters of sports competitions. And sporting competition in professional football means striving for a position in the domestic standings that allows the team to enter international competitions,” Mintzlaff said.
“For us, changing this is absolutely impossible. We reject any plans to establish the Super League,” Mintzlaff added.
7. Seville
Although the Super League is supported by three Spanish League giants, Sevilla has no interest in joining. In fact, in its release, Sevilla seemed to expose the bad side of the European Super League.
