San Siro Stadium will be torn down and its name will no longer be used

The Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, San Siro in Milan, is likely to be torn down and the name is no longer used. The plan is due to the desire of AC Milan and Inter Milan to build a new stadium.

At first, Milan and Inter planned to build a new stadium not far from the current San Siro location.  AC Milan preferred the option because it allows the club to play at the San Siro until the new stadium is finished.

However, at a joint meeting between Milan, Inter and Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala, a plan emerged that the San Siro Stadium was to be torn down. The reason is because the location of two stadiums that are too close together is considered impractical and efficient.

Not only that, the new stadium will also not utilize the name of the old stadium. Like the current trend, the new stadium will seek to use the names of those who are willing to become sponsors.

The move has been carried out by Juventus who use the name Allianz Stadium. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, the Milan city government will soon announce the stages for the stadium construction project. If everything goes according to plan, the inauguration of the new stadium can be realized early in the season 2023-2024.

The new stadium is planned to have a capacity of 60,000 seats, less than the current San Siro Stadium which has a capacity of 80,000 seats. Hence, San Siro stadium is the largest stadiums in Italy. The total construction costs reached 600 million euros.

Inter’s managing director, Alessandro Antonello, believes the joint project with Milan will be one of the fundamental assets for the growth of the two clubs.

“Inter and Milan have been working on the San Siro project for several months now, we still have work to do until the time is right,” Antonello told Sky Sports.

In Italy it is still rare for clubs to have their own stadium. Most clubs still rent stadiums owned by the local government, including San Siro. There are only three clubs that have their own stadium, namely Juventus, Udinese and Sassuolo.
