The La Liga season remains halted as the Covid-19 outbreak grips the sporting world and no clear conclusion is sight yet. The situation is clearly evolving day-by-day and the league did not offer a deadline by which play must resume.
Speaking at Marca, Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic said he is ready to return to the pitch with teammates if the situation is recovered now.
“I want to play, the time has come to give back to society what we received. No one could have imagined this situation, but we must think positive.” Raktic said.
“We must be more united than ever, together we can make it. I’m a person who likes to control things, so this situation is disorienting. My family was also worried, but thank god we are all doing well.” Rakitic added.
France Ligue 1 has been forced to end the 2019/20 season due to the Covid-19 outbreak. The decision comes after Montpellier’s Junior Samba became the first player to test positive for Covid-19 last week.
“I respect all points of view, recently we saw that France decided not to end the season, every country needs to analyze their situation and make their choices,” Rakitic said.
“It can’t be a common choice for everyone. When countries decide what to do they will defend the players and their citizens’ health.” Rakitic added.
Barcelona are 2 points clear in the La Liga title race and it remains to be seen whether they will be rewarded for their efforts.
La Liga president Javier Tebas insisted that it is not an option to end the season. He is hopeful the league can begin again in mid-June.
“In Spain, football is an important economic driver that we need to reactivate like many others. We continue to focus on this reactivation, in a responsible manner and adhering to health recommendations, as soon as possible.” he added.
