NHL Will Move to Phase 2 for Training

The National Hockey League (NHL) announced Thursday night that it will move to Phase 2 of its return to play plan on Monday.

If they meet the requirements of the Phase 2 protocol, all clubs will be allowed to reopen their training facilities to allow players to participate in individual sessions, on and off the ice. It will be on a voluntary basis. There will be a maximum of six players at a time, plus a limited number of staff members.

The Phase 2 protocol measures aim to provide players with a safe and controlled environment. This phase should not be considered as the training camp. The necessary preparation for phase 2 can start now. This includes information sessions and scheduling medical exams.

Earlier on Thursday, the Bettman circuit released details of the 24-team playoff formula, which will take place if authorities allow, in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Commissioner Gary Bettman said last week that the league was in favor of a fixture clash system, which has been in place since 2014. However, the players preferred that the confrontations be adjusted to the advantage of the best team after each round and managed to tip the scales.

Maple Leafs captain John Tavares, member of the joint stimulus committee, said last week that players want an asterisk next to the name of the champion cup team Stanley.

“Everyone who will have their name engraved on the trophy will have deserved it,” Tavares he said.

The NHL suspended its campaign on March 12 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The league said last week that the regular season is over.

Holding training camps represents phase 3; we hope to take this step early in July. Phase 4 will mark the resumption of play, possibly in late July or early August.
