Six Indonesian Badminton Representatives for Tokyo Olympics in 2021

Six representatives from Indonesian that have been confirmed to appear at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. The certainty was obtained by referring to the BWF ranking and the new qualification rules released by BWF.

The World Badminton Federation (BWF) has announced the latest provisions regarding the qualifications of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics which will be held on July 23 – August 8, 2021.

Steps were taken to ensure a fair solution in the qualification system. This amendment was approved by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). In addition, there are also changes in qualifications at the 2020 Paralympics which have also been approved by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC).

Under the new provisions, all the points that athletes have earned from tournaments that have been completed during the Olympic qualification period (until the All England 2020) will still be included into the Race to Tokyo Olympic.

The tournaments that have been rescheduled by BWF starting from August-December 2020, the results will not be considered.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympic qualification period will start again in the first week until the 17th week of 2021, only covering tournaments that have been delayed or canceled due to the impact of Covid-19 in 2020, including: German Open, Swiss Open, Lingshui China Masters, Orleans Masters, Indian Open, Malaysia Open, Singapore Open and individual continental championships (Asian Badminton Championships, European Championships and so on).

The next provision for players from China and Hong Kong who did not get points this year from the Asian Badminton Team Championships in Manila, Philippines, in February 2020, will get points from the Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championships 2021 (BAMTC). This was due to the absence of the two teams due to covid-19 travel restriction regulations from the Philippine government.

Based on the new rules issued by the BWF, Indonesia has certainly already had 6 representatives for the Tokyo Olympics, which in total consist of 10 badminton players. Indonesia still has the opportunity to add other representatives, especially from the mixed doubles sector, namely the couple Hafiz Faizal / Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja.

The following are 6 representatives of Indonesia that have been confirmed to appear at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.

1. Anthony Sinisuka Ginting

Anthony Sinisuka Ginting is certain to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics because it currently occupies sixth place. Anthony managed to collect 78,332 points.

Anthony Ginting outperformed two of his Indonesian colleagues from the men’s singles number, Jonatan Christie who was in seventh position and Shesar Hiren Rhustavito who was ranked 18th. With advanced qualifications at the event held on January 4 to May 2, 2021, it is impossible for the two names to succeed in removing Anthony.

2. Jonatan Christie

Jonatan Christie also confirmed  to appear at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. The athlete, who is familiarly called Jojo, was ranked seventh with 74,950 points.

That number makes Jojo accompany Anthony Ginting to the Tokyo Olympics. Although there are further qualifications held in January-May 2021, it is impossible for Jojo to be displaced.

3. Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo / Marcus Fernaldi Gideon

Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo / Marcus Fernaldi Gideon are certain to perform at the Tokyo Olympics. The pair nicknamed The Minions inhabited the top of the men’s doubles ranking at BWF. Kevin / Marcus packed 106,853 points. That number makes The pair qualify at the Tokyo Olympics.

4. Mohammad Ahsan / Hendra Setiawan

Mohammad Ahsan / Hendra Setiawan has also been confirmed to appear at the Tokyo Olympics. The pair nicknamed The Daddies packed 97,557 points and occupied second place under Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo / Marcus Fernaldi Gideon.

5. Greysia Polii / Apriyani Rahayu

Greysia Polii / Apriyani Rahayu will represent the women’s doubles number at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. Greysia / Apriyani currently occupies eighth place with 72,105 points.

6. Praveen Jordan / Melati Daeva Oktavianti

Praveen Jordan / Melati Daeva Oktavianti is certain to win the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021. At present, Praveen / Melati is ranked fourth with 80,247 points.
