Who is the Moto2 World Champion?

The competition in Moto2 2020 reaches its climax in Moto2 Portugal. Here’s how four riders can become world champions Moto2.

With one last series remaining, there are still four riders who have the chance to become Moto2 world champion, namely Enea Bastianini (194 points), Sam Lowes (180), Luca Marini (176), and Marco Bezzecchi (171).

Bastianini is clearly the racer with the most chances of becoming world champion in Moto2 because he has a 14-point advantage over the closest competitors. The following is an overview of the opportunities for four riders to become world champions in Moto2 2020 in Portugal:

1. Enea Bastianini will be world champion if:

  • Finish in the top four. That note makes Bastianini have at least 207 points, Sam Lowes cannot possibly catch up.
  • Finish in 5-8 position with the condition that Sam Lowes is only able to finish in maximum as runner-up. The record makes Bastianini’s points still above Sam Lowes’ points (200 points).
  • Finish in ninth position on the condition that Sam Lowes only finishes runner-up and Luca Marini fails to win.
  • Finish in position 10-13 with the condition that Sam Lowes is only in the third position and Luca Marini is only runner-up at the maximum. Bastianini’s points are at 197, still above the collection of the three competing racers.
  • Finish in 14th place with the condition that Sam Lowes only finishes in fourth place. In addition, Luca Marini only finishes runner-up at the maximum and Marco Bezzecchi does not win.
  • Finish in 15th position with the condition that Sam Lowes finishes in fourth place at most, Luca Marini can finish in third, and Marco Bezzecchi does not win.
  • Finishing outside the top 15 or failing to finish on condition that Sam Lowes finishes in fourth place at the maximum, Luca Marini can finish in third, and Marco Bezzecchi does not win.

2. Sam Lowes will be world champion if:

  • Moto2 Champion Portugal while Enea Bastianini finishes fifth or worse. If Sam Lowes and Bastianini both collect 105 points, Sam Lowes will be world champion by winning the number of draws.
  • Runner-up with the condition that Enea Bastianini only finish in 11th position or worse and Luca Marini fails to win the Moto2 Portugal. Thus Sam Lowes’ 200 point collection will be the highest.
  • Third place with the condition that Enea Bastianini only finishes in 15th position or worse, Luca Marini finishes at the maximum, and Marco Bezzecchi does not win the Portuguese MotoGP.

3. Luca Marini will be world champion if:

  • Finish in first position provided Enea Bastianini only finishes in ninth position or worse and Sam Lowes finishes runner-up or worse.

The record made Luca Marini win 101 points. If Bastianini finishes in ninth position, Bastianini will also have 101 points. However, Luca Marini is confirmed to be the world champion because he has more series wins.

Meanwhile, Sam Lowes will only collect 200 points after being runner-up in the Portuguese MotoGP.

  • Finish in second place provided Enea Bastianini only finishes 15th or worse and Sam Lowes only finishes fourth or worse and Marco Bezzecchi does not become the Portuguese MotoGP champion.

That record makes Luca Marini have 196 points, ahead of Bastianini (195) and Sam Lowes (193 points).

4. Marco Bezzecchi will be world champion if:

  • Win the Portuguese Moto2 on the condition that Bastianini only finishes in 14th place or worse, Sam Lowes only finishes third or worse, and Luca Marini only finishes runner-up or worse.

If the four riders have the same value, 196 with the above conditions, Bezzecchi will be the champion with an advantage in the number of podiums after the four drivers have both won three series.

If the racers’ points are the same, the number of victories will be determined by the number of podiums. Here are the conditions for the number of series wins and the number of podiums for the four riders up to Moto2 Valencia:

Number of draws: Bastianini (3), Lowes (3), Marini (3) Bezzecchi (2)

Number of podiums: Bastianini (7), Lowes (6), Marini (5), Bezzecchi (7)
