Chelsea managed to beat the host Newcastle United 2-0 in the Premier League continued week 9, Saturday (21/11).
Playing at St James Park Stadium, Chelsea had the first chance in the early minutes. Starting from the shots of Timo Werner, Reece James, and Mateo Kovacic. But there was no goal.
In minute 10, Chelsea opened the scoring after Mason Mount’s bait from the right failed to be swept away by the host defender, Federico Fernandez. The ball that hit his leg slid into his own goal.
Until half an hour, Chelsea continued to press up to a third of the Newcastle field.
The Blues had a good chance in the 31st minute, when Werner was unattended to get a shooting space in the penalty box. Unfortunately his slow kick to the right of the goal did not meet the target.
Meanwhile, The Magpies, who rely on counterattacks, have a chance to equalize. But the completion is bad and seems rushed.
Until the first half, Chelsea was able to maintain its superiority.
In the second half, the tempo of the match did not change much.
On 52 minutes, Werner, who was able to steal the ball from a Newcastle defender, dribbled into the penalty box and faced one on one with goalkeeper Karl Darlow.
But he chose to feed Tammy instead of shooting. Unfortunately the bait was not so good and was able to be secured by the Newcastle defender.
While Kurt Zouma’s header from a corner in the 54th minute was still sideways to the left of the Newcastle goal.
Newcastle, who in the second half had dared to come out to attack, still failed to score.
57 minutes, Isaac Hayden failed to take advantage of opportunities to equalize. Standing free in the Chelsea penalty box, his shot soared high.
Chelsea actually doubled the advantage on 65 minutes. Through a counter-attack scheme, Werner, who dribbled from a third of the field, was able to get past the two Newcastle defenders.
Without being selfish, Werner, who had the chance to shoot, preferred to feed Tamy who was standing free. The England striker easily poked the ball against Darlow’s goal.
74 minutes, Werner is able to outwit Darlow and throw the ball into the goal. Unfortunately the referee disallowed the goal because Werner was offside.
After that, the two teams attacked each other and created opportunities. But no more goals were created.
Until the end, Chelsea was able to maintain the victory and bring home the three points.
With this victory, Chelsea shot to the top of the standings with 18 points, shifting Leicester City by the same points. Chelsea are superior on goal difference from Leicester who just played against Liverpool on Monday (23/11).
Meanwhile, Newcastle is stuck in 13th place with a collection of 11 points.
