Brighton’s sad story: one goal overturned, two penalties missed

Brighton & Hove Albion lost 0-1 to West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League match. The loss saw two penalties missed and a Lewis Dunk goal disallowed.

West Brom took the lead through Kyle Bartley in the 11th minute. After that goal, Brighton had a number of opportunities to equalize. The best chances are of course through the two penalties executed by Pascal Gross in the 19th minute and Danny Welbeck in the 75th minute.

However, the two penalties failed to become goals. Gross and Welbeck both hit the post. Due to this, Brighton became the first team in the Premier League era to miss penalties twice for hitting the post in the same match.

Apart from the two missed penalties, another thing that disappointed Brighton was of course Lewis Dunk’s goal disallowed in the 29th minute. Lewis Dunk scored with a quick free-kick like the one he did against Liverpool. Referee Lee Mason also had time to point to the kick off point which was a sign the goal was valid.

But Brighton’s joy did not last long as the goal was ruled out following a VAR process.

In the second half, Brighton continued to try to change things. They played more aggressively than before the break. In the 55th minute Maupay goes past several defenders and shoots the ball straight into the net but the goalkeeper is pushed out.

Five minutes later, Yokuslu made a vital tackle to steal a shot on goal from Connolly. Two minutes later, Veltman threatened but his shot was over the crossbar.

Brighton even won another penalty in the 74th minute when Townsend brought down Gross. Welbeck became the executor, but Welbeck shot hit the bottom left post. He even failed to maximize the rebound ball. Score lasted 1-0 for West Brom until the final whistle.

After the match, Lewis Dunk shed his disappointment.

“This is really embarrassing. This is a terrible decision. I said to the referee, ‘Can I take it [free kick?’. He blew the whistle and I kicked him.”

“Just because he was under a lot of pressure off the bench and the [West Brom] players did he cancel the goal,” Lewis Dunk said in a post-match interview.

Lewis Dunk hopes there will be an explanation from referee Lee Mason regarding this incident.

“VAR doesn’t know what he [referee Lee Mason] said. What a terrible decision. Why doesn’t he come and talk to the media like me?”

“Why didn’t he come and explain his decision?” said Lewis Dunk.
