Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane considered it ridiculous if Los Blancos were banned from appearing in the Champions League next season because of their involvement in the European Super League.
For information, Madrid is one of the 12 founders of the early European Super League. Apart from the club in the Spanish capital, Chelsea and Man City, who are also in the semifinals of this season’s Champions League, are also in danger of being disqualified for similar reasons.
In the end, the two English clubs along with four others as well as some representatives from Italy and Spain declared their withdrawal from the European Super League. Apart from the controversial tournament issue, Zidane was quite upset when he responded to the discourse that Madrid would be kicked out.
The issue of Madrid will be punished by UEFA by being dropped from the Champions League because the club in the Spanish capital is the founder of the European Super League.
In fact, when a number of other clubs resigned, Madrid became one of the survivors in the league that was considered to have separated from UEFA with Barcelona and Juventus.
Ahead of Madrid vs Chelsea in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final at the Alfredo Di Stefano Stadium, Wednesday (28/4), Zidane felt annoyed that the threat was absurd.
“It makes no sense to think we will not appear in the Champions League [next season],” Zidane was quoted as saying by Marca.
However, the French coach was reluctant to discuss further rumors of UEFA’s punishment and the issue of the European Super League. According to Zidane, his side chose to concentrate on the first leg of the Champions League semi-final against Chelsea.
“There is a lot of talk from outside. There will be a lot of talk, but because we are not controlling it, I am only focused on the match,” said Zidane.
Zidane also underlined that Madrid has its own value in the Champions League. For Zidane, many people want Madrid to appear in the Champions League next season.
“But my opinion is we all want to see Madrid in the Champions League,” said the 48-year-old coach.
Recently UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin has continued to speak out about the risks that the clubs that set up the European Super League have to face.
According to Ceferin, the decision of UEFA can be different for the 12 founding clubs. Madrid is hinted that it can get tougher sanctions because it is still in the European Super League to date.
