Mason Greenwood, Man United Wonderkid Who Passed Rooney’s Record

Mason Greenwood also scored one goal when Manchester United beat Aston Villa on Sunday (9/5/2021). That one goal makes Greenwood past Wayne Rooney’s record. Visiting the Villa Park Stadium, the headquarters of Aston Villa, Man United made a comeback to win 3-1 over the home team.

Having fallen behind first through Bertrand Traore’s goal in the first half, the Red Devils were able to score to three goals each through the actions of Bruno Fernandes, Mason Greenwood and Edinson Cavani. It was Greenwood’s 16th goal in a total of 62 appearances in the Premier League with Manchester United.

Quoting Sky Sport Statto’s statistics, Greenwood’s 16 goals collection made him the teenager player (before he was 20 years old) with the highest number of Premier League goals for Man United. Greenwood surpassed the former Red Devils captain Wayne Rooney’s record 15 goals. Previously, Mason Greenwood also beat the record of goalscoring by Marcus Rashford (13), Ryan Giggs (12) and Cristiano Ronaldo (8) for Manchester United as a teenager.

Greenwood’s performance towards the end of the 2020-2021 season is indeed impressive. Of the last 10 matches in all competitions, the player educated by the Manchester United academy has successfully netted seven goals. Meanwhile, so far Greenwood has collected 11 goals from 48 competitive matches in the 2020-2021 season. Of his 11 goals this season, he has scored six of them on the Premier League stage. Greenwood is now the mainstay of coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on the right wing of Manchester United.

For information, Greenwood was promoted to Man United’s first team in the 2018-2019 season. The teenage born in Bradford made his debut with the Red Devils when he became a substitute in the second leg of the Champions League last 16 against Paris Saint Germain (PSG).

Entering to replace Ashley Young in the 87th minute, Greenwood was recorded as the youngest Manchester United player (17 years, 156 days) to make his debut in European competition in the Champions League era. Four days after his European debut, Mason Greenwood played his first Premier League match with Manchester United against Arsenal.
