Indonesia’s Journey to Win the Thomas Cup

Indonesia is confirmed to be the champion of the 2020 Thomas Cup (2021). The following is Indonesia’s journey to win the Thomas Cup 2020.

Indonesia managed to end a long wait of 19 years by winning the 2020 Thomas Cup (2021).

On the way, Indonesia managed to wipe out three group stage matches, one quarter-final match, one semifinal match and the Thomas Cup final with a win.

Indonesia managed to start the 2020 Thomas Cup (2021) with a 5-0 win over Algeria in the inaugural Group A match on 9 October 2021.

Indonesia then continued the positive trend by successfully defeating the strongest opponent in Group A, namely Thailand with a score of 3-2.

Indonesia won through two men’s doubles: Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo/Marcus Gideon and Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Rian Ardianto, as well as men’s singles Shesar Hiren Rhustavito.

In the last match of Group A, Indonesia was able to beat Taiwan with a score of 3-2. This time, Indonesia won through three men’s singles: Anthony Sinisuka Ginting, Jonatan Christie, and Shesar Hiren Rhustavito.

Indonesia then managed to qualify for the quarter-finals with the status of Group A winners after recording three victories.

In the quarter-finals, Indonesia successfully defeated Malaysia with a score of 3-0 on 15 October 2021.

Indonesia immediately wiped out the first three matches against Malaysia with wins, namely through Anthony Sinisuka Ginting, Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo/Marcus Gideon, and Jonatan Christie.

Furthermore, in the semifinals, Indonesia successfully defeated host Denmark with a score of 3-1, Saturday (16/10).

Having lost in the first party after Anthony Sinisuka Ginting was defeated by Viktor Axelsen, Indonesia was able to rise and wipe out the next three matches with a win.

Indonesia won through men’s doubles Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo/Marcus Gideon, men’s singles Jonatan Christie, and men’s doubles Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Rian Ardianto.

Furthermore, in the Thomas Cup final, Indonesia successfully defeated China with a score of 3-0 at Ceres Arena, Aarhus, Denmark, on Sunday (17/10) night WIB.

In the final, Indonesia won over China through the men’s singles, Anthony Sinisuka Ginting, who defeated Lu Guang Zu with a score of 18-21, 21-14, and 21-16.

Indonesia won the second victory through the men’s doubles Fajar Alfian / Muhammad Rian Ardianto. Fajar/Rian successfully beat the Chinese pair with two straight games 21-12 and 21-19.

The Indonesian contingent finally managed to secure a 3-0 victory over China through Jonathan Christie’s success in defeating Li Shi Feng with a score of 21-14, 18-21, 21-14.
