Daniil Medvedev Struggles to Start Efforts to Defend the ATP Finals

Daniil Medvedev successfully started the effort to defend the title of the season-ending tournament, the ATP Finals, despite having to play extra hard.

Conceded in the first set, the world number 2 won 6-7, 6-3, 6-4 over Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz so that he is now 1-0 in the Red Group of the ATP Finals which this season is being held in Turin.

The tennis player, who this season won a fourth Masters 1000 title in Toronto and a first Grand Slam title at the US Open, showed confidence by staying calm after dropping the first set. He fought back with an impressive serve and steady play from the baseline to take the win after 2 hours 1 minute.

“I didn’t face any break points to secure, so in a way I was never under pressure,” said Daniil Medvedev.

“I only had two service games where I created break points. Very happy to have made it work and that I managed to get both break points.”

The Russian has won 23 of the last 26 matches she has played with 19 of which she has won in two or three straight sets. After bagging 0-3 on his debut at the ATP Finals two seasons ago, he is now six wins in a row at the season-ending tournament.

While the player who debuted in the ATP Finals, Hurkacz competed well in his first match by showing a beautiful game in the net area and not feeling afraid to enter the forecourt. But he never found a way to challenge the serve of the world number 2 and it cost him a fortune.

Hurkacz played superbly in the tiebreak to take the lead and there is no doubt this season’s Miami Open champion can overcome the moment after he beat the Russian at Wimbledon this season. But the Russian did better in longer rallies and consistently fired extra balls.

Throughout the match, Medvedev faced no break points and won 83 percent of points from his first serve. He shot 15 aces and in his service games, he rarely gave Hurkacz a chance to enter the field.

With the win, Medvedev who bagged 55-12 now equals Stefanos Tsitsipas (55-18) and Alexander Zverev (55-14) as the men’s player with the most wins this season.
