Nick Kyrgios leaves Mallorca, doesn’t want to take risks ahead of Wimbledon

Nick Kyrgios woke up with abdominal pain on Wednesday morning (22/6) local time and decided to withdraw from the Mallorca Championships.

The 27-year-old is scheduled to meet the host, Roberto Bautista Agut in the second round of the Mallorca Championships.

“I feel really sorry I have to withdraw from tonight’s game here in Mallorca. I’ve had a lot of impressive matches lately and unfortunately I woke up with a pain in my stomach. I immediately went to the doctor and he advised me not to play tonight,” Kyrgios explained.

“I really appreciate the Mallorca Championships, but I will follow the doctor’s advice because I don’t want to take any risks ahead of Wimbledon next week.”

In the first round of the Mallorca Championships, the world number 45 knocked out Serbian Laslo Djere with a tight result 5-7, 7-6, 7-6.

Wimbledon kicks off next week and the Australian will use the next four days to rest and prepare for a third Grand Slam of the 2022 season.

The world number 45 this season has played a lot of matches on grass-court tournaments, so he is definitely not short on games and feeling confident heading into the Grand Slam in London.

Nick Kyrgios started the 2022 grass-court season two weeks ago at the Stuttgart Open when he made it to the semifinals before losing to Briton Andy Murray. Last week, the Australian made it to the semifinals of the Halle Open before losing to Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz. After two convincing trips in Germany, the world number 45 is hoping to make a convincing comeback at Wimbledon.

Kyrgios’ best achievement in a Grand Slam last season won by Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic was when he reached the quarter-finals of the 2014 season on his Grand Slam debut. Last season, his pace stalled in the third round after he was forced to withdraw from a match against Canadian Felix Auger Aliassime after two sets. This season, he will appear as the unseeded player and many believe that he is not a player that anyone wants to face at the start of the tournament.
