Former Manchester City defender, Nedum Onouha, called Liverpool a candidate to win the Premier League, the highest caste of the English League, for the 2022-2023 season. He has reasons for choosing Liverpool as favourites.
The performance of the team led by Jurgen Klopp is very promising in the 2021-2022 season. The Reds, Liverpool, almost won the Premier League last season. Unfortunately, their ambitions were thwarted by Manchester City, who returned to become champions.
Liverpool only lost one point to Man City in the final standings. The Citizens, nicknamed Man City, have 93 points while the Reds collect 92 points. This failure could be Liverpool’s motivation to face the new season. They have the potential to win a second Premier League title under Jurgen Klopp.
Previously, Klopp ended Liverpool’s title drought on the Premier League stage in the 2019-2020 season. The Reds add a trophy to their wardrobe after 30 years of absence. Before Liverpool won, in 2018-2019 to be exact, the Reds also finished in second place and lost by one point to Man City. That season, the points were unmitigated. Man City won with 98 points and Liverpool had to settle for runners-up with 97 points.
This pattern is believed to occur in the new season. This means Liverpool will come out as champion. Former Man City defender Nedum Onouha believes Liverpool has the potential to outperform his former team in the race for the Premier League title. Onouha said that small details will determine who will come out as champion.
“Liverpool and Manchester City are by far the two closest teams to winning it,” Onouha said. “City are looking for something different, maybe that means in the league they won’t run the way they need to be competitive (for the title).” added Onouha. Admittedly, Liverpool and Man City have been competing for the Premier League title in recent years. Man City is quite dominant because they won four times in five seasons while Liverpool only once. However, their competition is always fierce.
The 2022-23 season will be different. Because, Liverpool and Man City brought in a new striker. Liverpool brought Darwin Nunez from Benfica, while Man City brought in Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund. Thus, the competition between the two teams is no longer about the Premier League trophy. They will also fight for the title of top scorer. It is worth watching on how the two giant teams compete.
