Alcaraz Is Keen to Stay Number 1 until the End of the Year

Carlos Alcaraz said he’s keen to remain at the top of the world scoreboard when the season ended on October 31 during the ATP’s honour ceremony.

Alcaraz has a special award for the youngest player to become world number one at the Palais Omnisports de Bercy of the Paris Masters.

The Spanish tennis player reached number one after the US Open in September, at 19 years and 4 months and 7 days.

ATP awarded Alcaraz the commemorative cup before the opening series of the year-end Masters 1000 event on Monday.

“My dream has come true. I’ve always dreamed of winning a Grand Slam and becoming number one.” Alcaraz said.

“Everything came to me very early, beyond all expectations. I want to keep this position until the end of the year, that is the biggest goal.” Alcaraz added.

Alcaraz is the number one seed Paris Masters, will meet Yoshihito Nishioka on November 2 in the second round. He and seven other top seeds, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, were exempt from the first round.

Alcaraz hasn’t made it to the final since becoming world number one. He has just been eliminated in the semi-finals of the Basel Open, at the hands of Felix Auger-Aliassime.

He also previously lost the opening match of the Astana Open to senior David Goffin. The six-time ATP title holder said he suffered from leg pain after a strenuous journey at the US Open.

“I have some discomfort in my knees. But that’s not an excuse. This injury is not serious, it’s normal in tennis that everyone faces.” Alcaraz said.

“At the end of the season, things don’t go as smoothly as when you start in January.” he added.

According to the Paris Masters draw, Alcaraz could face Andrey Rublev in the quarterfinals, then either Daniil Medvedev or Felix Auger-Aliassime in the semi-finals. He can only meet Nadal or Djokovic in the final.
