Gabriel Barbosa Banned for Two Years For Anti-Doping ‘Fraud’

Gabriel Barbosa, the forward for Flamengo FC, has been hit with a two-year suspension by a Brazilian sports court for his involvement in attempting to manipulate drug test results. The 27-year-old, commonly known as Gabigol, faced accusations of non-cooperation during an impromptu drug test conducted at the club’s headquarters in Rio de Janeiro.

The penalty, which dates back to April 8 of the previous year when the incident occurred, is subject to appeal. Barbosa allegedly showed disregard for doping officials, failed to comply with their instructions, and did not adhere to the testing protocol.

Following a trial by the Full Court of Sports Anti-Doping, it was concluded that Barbosa had violated anti-doping regulations through fraudulent means, as per a statement from the court sent to AFP. In response, Gabigol took to social media to deny any attempt to manipulate the test, expressing confidence in being vindicated by the highest court.

Reports suggest that on the day of testing, Barbosa neglected to attend as requested and only appeared after lunch, while his teammates underwent testing in the morning. He reportedly became agitated when directed to the restroom by an official upon his belated arrival. Additionally, it is alleged that he did not follow proper procedures for sample collection. The anti-doping organization indicated, citing sources, that the two-year ban would commence on April 8, 2023, the date of the violation.

Despite the controversy and allegations surrounding Barbosa’s involvement in anti-doping fraud, Flamengo FC executives issued a statement affirming their support for the player, asserting their belief in his innocence and pledging assistance with his appeal.

Gabigol, renowned for his contributions to Flamengo’s triumphs in the 2019 domestic league and Copa Libertadores, rose to prominence through Santos’ academy. Following less successful spells at Inter Milan and Benfica, he joined Flamengo in 2019. Barbosa earned a call-up to the Brazil squad following his resurgence with Flamengo, making his last of 18 international appearances in January 2022.

Amidst the ongoing controversy, the outcome of Barbosa’s court case remains uncertain. As a participant in the 2016 Rio Olympics, where he secured a gold medal for Brazil, Barbosa retains the right to contest the ruling before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

Fans eagerly await the resolution of the case, hoping to see Barbosa back on the field soon, especially considering his contract with Flamengo FC expires in December of this year.
