Argentina legend in line for Cape Town City job?

Cape Town City FC boss John Comitis says he will take his time in deciding on a new coach after reportedly receiving CV’s from the likes of Gabriel Batistuta and Chris O’Loughlin.

The former Ajax Cape Town supremo lost Eric Tinkler to SuperSport United after just one season and wants to make sure he makes the right choice in appointing his replacement.

Comitis received a reported 35 applications, including those of Batistuta, O’Loughlin, Claudio Gentile and Paul Dolezar while the likes of Ruud Krol, and Benni McCarthy have also been linked to the position.

“I know Krol from his time as an assistant-coach at Ajax Amsterdam and he won the treble with Orlando Pirates, so he has the quality,” said Comitis as quoted by IOL website.

“But I wanted to go through every CV I received because you never know what could pop up. I wanted to make sure that I wasn’t missing anything.

“I don’t want to make too hasty a decision. I’ve got experience of this from my many years in the game. Believe me, you don’t want to rush into it.”

He added: “From my perspective, I have to make sure that I make the right decision. It’s easy to appoint a coach, but the problem arises when things get tough.

“Then the questions come: Does he have the temperament? Can he handle the pressure? Does he have solutions? I have to be able to count on the coach, so I want to make sure that I do the right thing.”

The 48-year-old Batistuta scored 56 times for Argentina in 78 games but has no managerial experience.

O’Loughlin, is a former Orlando Pirates assistant coach, who went on to manage AS Vita from the Republic of Congo ahead of assistant roles with Melbourne Victory and Sint-Truidense. He ultimately took over at the Belgian club – where McCarthy assisted him.

He is currently first team coach at Charlton Athletic.

Gentile, who played 71 times for Italy has managed the Italy U21 side and FC Sion.

Meanwhile, some media understands that McCarthy flew to Cape Town on Friday to meet with City owner, John Comitis, and held discussions on how to take the club forward after the sudden resignation of Eric Tinkler, who took over the reins at SuperSport United.
