Karl-Heinz Rummenigge to step down as CEO of Bayern Munich on 30 June 2021 and will be replaced by former German goalkeeper Oliver Kahn.
Originally, Rummenigge’s contract was set to expire on 31 December 2021, but he retires six months earlier to meet the end of June.
Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger honoured Rummenigge for his years of work as a player and club boss.
“Such careers are extremly rare. He was not only a great player who has collected many international titles and was European champion, he also formed one of the largest clubs in Europe, both as a manager and as a CEO had the greatest possible success. I am honoured to have witnessed this development over many years.” Wenger said.
Rummenigge has been working for Munich for 30 years. As vice president, he led the German flagship club back on the road ro success from November 1991 together with Franz Beckenbauer. Since 2002 Rummenigge has worked successfully as Bayern CEO.
During his time, Rummenigge played a total of 310 appearances and scored 162 goals for Bayern. In addition, he was top scorer in 1980, 1981, and 1984. Rummenigge also won European Cup twice in 1975-1976, German championship twice in 1980 and 1981.
“It’s a farewell filled with satisfaction and pride, I’m able to hand over a club that is completely sound in sporting, economic and structural terms. That was important to me.” Rummenigge said.
“I would like to thank so many people whose paths I have crossed at FC Bayern. First and foremost, of course, my colleagues on the board, President Herbert Hainer and our committees, especially the supervisory board. But also all the employees of FC Bayern and, of course, our fantastic fans.” he added.
