Ashleigh Barty on Saturday has become the first home player to win the Australian Open 2022 women’s singles title in 44 years.
The Australian defeated American opponent Danielle Collins in 2 sets with the scores 6-3, 7-6 to crown at home without losing a set in the entire competition.
“As an Australian, the most important part is being able to share this victory with the fans and you guys are really great.” Barty said
“Competing under the cheers. of the home fans is one of the most interesting. You guys helped me relax and forced me to play to the best of my ability! Against a champion like Danielle.
“I have to play my best tennis in today’s match. This is a dream come true for me and I am very proud to be an Australian. So thank you very much everyone. We’ll see each other again next year!” Barty added.
Meanwhile, Collins heaped praised to Barty and she tahnked to the Australian Open fans.
“First of all, I think I owe Ashleigh a congrats on just two extraordinary weeks. past, as well as her stellar years in recent times.” Collins said.
“I really admire you as a tennis player and for the variety in your play. Hopefully I can add something to the way I play.” Collins added.
Collins was a a two-time NCAA singles champion while at the University of Virginia. Her breakthrough on the professional circuit came at the 2019 Australian Open where she reached the semifinals after upsetting World No. 2 Angelique Kerber in the fourth round.
“We wouldn’t be standing here without all of the amazing people behind the scenes. This is one of our favourite tournaments. It’s my favorite and I’m so grateful for it.” Collins said.
“Standing here was my childhood dream. I think it’s the favorite Grand Slam of most tennis players.” she added.
