Bayer Leverkusen Wins First Bundesliga Trophy After 120 Years

Bayer Leverkusen Wins First Bundesliga Trophy After 120 Years

Sunday (14/4/2024) was a historic day for Bayer Leverkusen. For the first time in history, Die Werkself succeeded in lifting the Bundesliga championship trophy.

This certainty was obtained when Bayer Leverkusen hosted Werder Bremen at BayArena some time ago. In the 29th week of the Bundesliga match, Leverkusen can lock the Bundesliga title on condition that they beat Bremen.

In front of tens of thousands of their loyal supporters, Die Werkself completed their task well. They managed to beat the guests with a landslide score of 5-0 thanks to Victor Boniface’s penalty, Granit Xhaka’s goal and Florian Wirtz’s hat trick.

This victory made Bayer Leverkusen achieve a total of 79 points from 29 matches, 16 points behind Bayern Munich in second place. With five matches remaining in the Bundesliga this season, Bayern can no longer catch up with Die Werkself’s points tally, so they have been crowned champions of the highest caste of German football for the 2023/2024 season.

Check out some interesting notes from Bayer Leverkusen’s success in winning the 2023/2024 Bundesliga below.

The 2023/2024 Bundesliga trophy is a special trophy for Leverkusen. Because this is the first Bundesliga trophy they have.

Since being founded in 1904, Bayer Leverkusen has never once won the Bundesliga. Their best achievement was being runners up on five occasions.

The last time they were runners up was in the 2010/2011 season, at which time Jurgen Klopp’s Borussia Dortmund managed to become champions.

Leverkusen’s Bundesliga trophy also feels even more special. Because they officially stopped Bayern Munich’s regime in the Bundesliga.

For the last 11 years, Bayern Munich has dominated German football. No team could stem the might of The Bavaria who managed to win 11 Bundesliga titles in a row.

However, Bayern’s dominance has officially ended thanks to Leverkusen’s success in winning the 2023/2024 Bundesliga.

This Bundesliga trophy is potentially not the only trophy that Leverkusen will win in the 2023/2024 season. Die Werkself has the potential to win treble winners.

They can win their second trophy from the DFB-Pokal event. They managed to reach the final round and will face FC Kaiserslautern on 25 May.

In the Europa League, Leverkusen is also a little away from reaching the semifinals. They beat West Ham with a score of 2-0 in the first leg of the 2023/2024 Europa League quarter-finals so they have the potential to advance to the final round.

The great success achieved by Bayer Leverkusen cannot be separated from the cold hands of Xabi Alonso.

Alonso was recruited by Leverkusen from Real Sociedad B on October 5 2022. He replaced Gerardo Seoane after Leverkusen was ranked 17th after eight Bundesliga games.

In a short time, Alonso changed the face of Leverkusen. In his first season, he succeeded in bringing Leverkusen to finish in sixth place in the final Bundesliga standings from previously being ranked 17th.

In his second season, Alonso made Die Werkself even more unstoppable where they were able to win the Bundesliga with five games remaining in the competition.
