Canelo Trainer Says His Boxer Made the Right Choice to Fight Kovalev

Canelo Alvarez

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will fight Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev on Saturday night in Las Vegas. Moving up two divisions against the Russian champion is a big challenge for the Mexican icon.

Canelo’s head trainer, Eddy Reynoso, is confident his boxer made the right choice is going after the WBO light heavyweight championship.

“We’re focused. We’ve been training for more than three months and have prepared very well. We haven’t had any setbacks with injuries or illnesses and we’re good.” Reynoso said.

“We’ve taken care of ourselves and we prepared well to be able to win this fight. Kovalev is a strong fighter and he has lots of good qualities. He’s made it this far in his career because of that. He has a good punch and has a lot of heart.

Canelo is considered the best fighter in the world by many, and he’s the top PPV star in the business, so there’s an incentive to keep him winning. The judges to be chosen will reflect that.

Based on that, Kovalev has to have the best training camp of his life. He has a great jab, but Gennady Golovkin and Daniel Jacobs also have great jabs and Canelo beat them. Kovalev needs to do many things to score the upset.

Kovalev needs to be a very strong 190 pounds into the ring. He needs to get the dehydration/rehydration process perfect. He has the advantage in height and reach. His feints and jabs have to be sharp and working to perfection.

“We’ve seen some errors in his fighting style and we hope to capitalize on those mistakes the day of the fight.” Reynoso said.

“It’s very important for us and for Mexican boxing that new figures arise, or new records are being broken. Whether that’s Saul or someone else, I think it’s important for everyone that’s in the world of boxing.” he added.

This is the most important fight of Kovalev’s life. He needs to get that through his skull. Many people thought he beat Andre Ward, but this is very different. If he beats Canelo there’ll be a rematch, and that’s when he’ll get paid.
