Champions League Top 16 Results: Los Blancos Won 5-2 at Anfield!

The results of Liverpool vs Real Madrid in the first leg of the last 16 of the 2022-2023 Champions League will be discussed here. In the match played at Anfield, Tuesday (21/2/2023), Los Blancos — nicknamed Real Madrid — won a landslide victory with a score of 5-2.

The Reds — nicknamed Liverpool — had a quick lead through goals from Darwin Nunez (4′) and Mohamed Salah (14′). However, a pair of Vinicius Junior goals in the 21st and 36th minutes leveled the score before halftime.

In the second half, Real Madrid got even crazier by scoring three goals. Eder Militao scored one goal in the 47th minute before being added by Karim Benzema in the 55th and 67th minute.

Just four minutes into the game, Liverpool immediately opened the scoring. Mohamed Salah sent the ball into the goalmouth and Darwin Nunez met it with a beautiful backheel. Liverpool also won 1-0.

In the 14th minute, it was Mohamed Salah’s turn to get his name on the scoreboard. Thibaut Courtois made a blunder because he miscontrolled the ball he received from Eder Militao. Mohamed Salah was in front of him and immediately fired without mercy to double the score.

Seven minutes later, Real Madrid finally responded to Liverpool’s challenge. Vinicius moved on the left side which was full of Liverpool players. He made a one-two with Benzema and fired a shot into the bottom right corner of the goal beyond Alisson’s reach. The score was 1-2.

Vinicius launched his threat again in the 31st minute. Dani Carvajal decided to pass to Vinicius in a corner. The Brazilian forward attempted again from the same side when he scored by sending the ball into the bottom right corner of the net. But now his compatriot, Alisson, managed to save his goal.

Five minutes later, the goalkeeper blunders again. This time it was carried out by Alisson Becker whose shot was blocked by Vinicius Junior and made the score equal 2-2.

Towards the end of the first half, Vinicius’ threat reappeared. His movement down the left flank was accompanied by Rodrygo. He sent a cross into the goalmouth where Rodrygo was waiting, but the chance was saved by Liverpool. Score 2-2 also marked the interval.

In the second half, Real Madrid immediately took the lead just two minutes after the match was played again. They get a free kick to the right of the Liverpool goal. The execution of Luka Modric’s free kick slid swiftly into the mouth of the goal and was immediately greeted by Eder Militao’s head.

As if that wasn’t enough, Real Madrid scored again in the 55th minute. The collaboration between Karim Benzema and Rodrygo was completed by the bomber from France. His shot hit Joe Gomez and created the goal that put Real Madrid 4-2 up.

12 minutes later, Real Madrid got further away through Karim Benzema’s second goal. A slick counterattack was displayed by Real Madrid after Luka Modric grabbed the ball in the middle of the field. The ball was handed to Vinicius who passed it back to Benzema. The French striker tackled Alisson before firing on target as the Liverpool players looked resigned.

The 5-2 score remained until the game was over. Real Madrid comfortably lead ahead of the second leg of the last 16 of the 2022-2023 Champions League which will be held at their home ground, the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.
