Chelsea have officially confirmed the arrival of Paris Saint-Germain defender Thiago Silva. The 35-year-old completed his medical on Friday morning after arriving into Stamford Bridge on Thursday night, and has signed one-year deal with option for extra year with the Blues, keeping him at the club until the end of the 2020-21 season.
Chelsea finished in fourth place in the top flight of English football. However, their manager Frank Lampard reportedly still needs a quality defender this summer.
“We are delighted to be able to add a player of Thiago Silva’s proven world class credentials to our squad.” Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia said.
“Having performed at the highest level for many years, we have no doubt his experience and quality will complement the many exciting talents we already have here.
“Thiago will be an excellent fit and we hope he can add some new trophies to him impressive list of honours.” Granovskaia added.
PSG signed Silva in July 2012 from AC Milan for a reported €42 million, making him then second-most expensive defender in history behind former Manchester United’s Rio Ferdinand. During his time at PSG, the Brazilian made a total of 315 appearances, including 21 this season as the Ligue 1 giants won a domestic treble.
“I am so happy to be joining Chelsea. I am delighted to be a part of Frank Lampard’s exciting squad for next season and I’m here to challenge for honours. See you soon Chelsea fans, I look forward to playing at Stamford Bridge very soon.” Silva said.
Silva was considered the best defender once along with Barcelona legend Carles Puyol, Chelsea legend John Terry, Manchester United legend Nemanja Vidic, and Ferdinand but lacked a solid team which dominated leagues and performed in the Champions league as well.
