Copa del Rey: Fierce! Atletico Eliminates Madrid via Extra Time

Atletico Madrid has qualified for the Copa del Rey quarter-finals. Atletico won a fierce duel against Real Madrid 4-2 in a match that went into extra time.

The Atletico Madrid vs Real Madrid duel in the round of 16 of the Copa del Rey was held at Civitas Metropolitano, Friday (19/1/2024).

Atletico opened the scoring in the 39th minute. Samuel Lino took advantage of Madrid’s back line error to put Atletico ahead.

Antonio Ruediger’s attempt to block a cross actually went towards Lino. Lino then beat Andriy Lunin to give Atletico a 1-0 lead.

Madrid equalized in first half injury time. Jan Oblak scored an own goal while trying to block Luka Modric’s free kick.

Atletico took the lead again in the 57th minute. Alvaro Morata took advantage of the confusion in Madrid’s back line to break through Lunin’s goal.

The ball bounced into Madrid’s penalty box. Lunin’s attempt to block the ball hit Ruediger who hesitated and the ball was then grabbed by Morata.

Madrid equalized in the 83rd minute. Jude Bellingham’s pass from the left side was completed by Joselu who was unmarked at the far post. Joselu freely headed the ball into the goal.

The score was level until normal time ran out forcing the match to go into extra time. Griezmann brought Atletico back ahead in extra time, to be precise in the 100th minute.

Atletico added a goal through Rodrigo Riquelme in the 119th minute. He took advantage of a pass from Memphis Depay and then fired a shot from inside the penalty box with his right foot.

Ancelotti said Madrid’s defeat was due to taking unnecessary risks and losing possession of the ball. Even so, Ancelotti is still happy with El Real’s performance because they have gone all out.

“We played well, we competed until the end, we fought hard and we came from behind twice,” said the Madrid coach on the club’s official website. “There were lots of chances, twice hitting the crossbar and a goal being disallowed.”

“We lost this match when we took unnecessary risks, we lost possession of the ball and they punished us. However, we played the match well. We couldn’t do more for several reasons. We have to think about recovering well and try to win on Sunday.”

“Atletico, like us, have tried very hard. Nobody deserves to lose. We did lose, but we have to look forward. We have given everything,” Ancelotti added after Real Madrid was knocked out by Atletico.
