Copa del Rey Quarterfinal Heat! Sevilla, Bilbao, and Mallorca make it to Top 8!

Sevilla overcame its difficulties in the Spanish league on Tuesday, beating Getafe 3-1 to advance to the Copa del Rey quarterfinals. Ramos scored once, and Isaac Romero scored twice, allowing Sevilla an easy victory and sending the southern Spanish club into the second round of the competition for the second straight year.

Sevilla won on the road thanks to goals from Sergio Ramos and Isaac Romero, securing a spot in the quarterfinals for the southern Spanish team for the second year in a row. Sevilla will attempt to qualify for the top four for the first time since 2021.

Sevilla has only triumphed once in its previous 14 league games, despite winning the final four Copa matches. With 16 points from 20 league games, Quique Sánchez Flores’ squad is only a single point above the relegation zone.

In the eighth minute of play, Ramos scored the first goal with a header; however, in the twenty-third, he could not completely clear a cross, which allowed Jaime Mata to equalize from within the area. Romero gave Sevilla a second lead in the 48th minute and completed the win in the 55th.

In the quarterfinals of the previous year, Sevilla was eliminated in extra time by Osasuna, the eventual runners-up. In 2021, it was defeated by Barcelona in the semifinals.

Getafe was attempting to make it to the Copa quarterfinals for the first time since 2019 despite being 10th in the Spanish league. Since then, it has never made it past the third round.

On Sunday, Sevilla takes on Girona, the current leaders of the Spanish league, while Getafe travels to Osasuna. At the home stadium, Athletic overcame Alaves thanks to goals from striker Asier Villalibre in the 28th and 60th minutes.

Athletic, currently ranked third in the Spanish league, finished second in 2020 and 2021 and advanced to the Copa semifinals the previous two seasons. Alaves, now ranked thirteenth in the league, was attempting to go to the Copa semifinals for the first time since 2018.

Additionally, on Tuesday, Mallorca advanced to the quarterfinals for the second time in the past three seasons by defeating second-tier team Tenerife 1-0 in overtime thanks to a goal by Canadian striker Cyle Larin in the 120th minute. It was Tenerife’s first time taking part in the round of sixteen since 2020.

Real Sociedad will travel to Osasuna, Valencia will welcome Celta Vigo, and Girona will host Rayo Vallecano in first-division fixtures on Wednesday. On Thursday, Real Madrid, the defending champion, will travel to Atletico Madrid, a competitor, and Barcelona will travel to Unionistas, a team in the third level.
