Cori Gauff Starts Tournament In Toronto With Victory Over Compatriot

Cori Gauff

Cori Gauff, 18, claimed her second win over 32-year-old Madison Brengle at the Canadian Open (Rogers Cup), Toronto in the 2022 season.

The two Americans previously met in the second round of the Italian Open, Rome in May, which the 18-year-old won 6-2, 6-4.

Meeting again at the Canadian Open this week, runner-up to the French Open for 2022, Gauff returned to win over compatriot Brengle with another convincing 6-1, 6-3 after 62 minutes.

The tenth seed has performed almost flawlessly both behind the court and at the net, including hitting 28 winners with only seven unforced errors. The meeting between the fastest players in the WTA tournament saw both players rush to every corner of the court and although the final position looked one-sided, Brengle had some impressive play.

Thanks to the win, Cori Gauff has now won six of the last seven matches against her compatriot and overall, till date she is 15-6 against her compatriot.

Awaiting Gauff in the second round of the Canadian Open is this season’s Wimbledon champion, Elena Rybakina and they will meet for the first time.

Meanwhile, another American, Claire Liu, was unable to follow in Gauff’s footsteps towards the second round of the Canadian Open.

Liu took a 4-1 lead in the deciding set against Spain’s Sara Sorribes Tormo, but the Americans were unable to cope with an opponent’s improving game. The Spaniard bounced back and finally claimed a 7-6, 2-6, 7-6 victory after 3 hours 33 minutes and converted a second match point chance, the third longest match in a WTA tournament so far in the 2022 season.

For a place in the third round of the Canadian Open, Sorribes Tormo will take on sixth seed Aryna Sabalenka.

In other action, another American, Amanda Anisimova, needed just 56 minutes to knock out her host and world number 188 Carol Zhao 6-1, 6-3.

The world number 22, Anisimova has continued her stellar season to date with a 32-12 record, including winning the Melbourne Summer Set 2 title and advancing to the Wimbledon quarter-finals.

Anisimova will next meet 14th seed Karolina Pliskova in the second round. In San Jose last week, she made an impressive comeback when she beat Czech Pliskova for the first time in five attempts.
