Daniel Levy Regrets Recruiting Mourinho and Antonio Conte

Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy said it was a “mistake” to employ Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte as coaches, adding that the Premier League club “needs to go back to its roots” with new coach Ange Postecoglou.

In March, former Juventus coach Conte became the second coach to leave the north London side in less than three years.

They also fired Mourinho two years ago after the Portuguese coach was brought in to replace Mauricio Pochettino.

Levy has come under fire in the past, with some Spurs fans blaming the 61-year-old for the club not winning a trophy since 2008.

“I want to win just like everyone else,” Levy said at a fan forum as quoted by ESPN.

“The frustration of not winning and the pressure from some of the players and a big element of the fan base that we need to win, we need to spend money, we need to have a big manager, a big name. And that affected me.”

Pochettino was sacked in 2019, just five months after taking Spurs to the Champions League final.

The Argentinian coach previously served at Paris Saint-Germain before taking over Chelsea this summer.

“I’ve gone through periods where we were close to winning, with Mauricio we went through very, very good times,” Levy said.

“We’re not there yet, but we’re close to it, and we’re making a change in strategy.”

“The strategy was to bring in a trophy manager and we did it twice. You have to learn from mistakes.”

Postecoglou’s appointment has managed to lift the gloom surrounding the club by guiding them to their best start to a league season in 57 years.

Spurs are second in the standings with 13 points from five games, just two points behind treble winners Manchester City.

Spurs next visit city rivals Arsenal on Sunday before hosting third-placed Liverpool on September 30.

“They [Mourinho and Conte] are great managers, but maybe not for this club,” added Levy. “For what we want, we want to play a certain way and if that means it takes longer to win, maybe that’s the right thing for us.

“And that’s why bringing in Ange, from my point of view, was the right decision.”
