Dayana Yastremska caused one of the shocking defeats at the Australian Open, Melbourne 2024 season so far.
The former world number 21 tennis player put on a strong performance when he defeated seventh seed Marketa Vondrousova with a landslide result 6-1, 6-2 in less than 1 hour. He also caused his first defeat against a player ranked in the top 10 at the 2024 Australian Open season.
The victory over the 2023 Wimbledon champion, Vondrousova, is the Ukrainian tennis player’s fourth victory over a player ranked in the top 10 as well as her first victory over a player in that ranking at a Grand Slam. This victory was also his second victory over a Czech national, but his last victory over a Czech national occurred six seasons ago.

The world number 96 tennis player appeared dominant in most of the match. She hit 26 winners, much more than Vondrousova who hit five winners. He also broke the Czech tennis player’s serve five times.
The most competitive moments in the match occurred in the first two games and the last two games. The Ukrainian tennis player won two games involving more than one deuce when starting the match. Four games later it was back to deuce in the second set and after failing to convert a match point opportunity in the seventh game, the Ukrainian tennis player saved a break point opportunity before converting the third match point opportunity.
“The last time I played against Marketa, I lost to him. “It was a fierce match,” said Yastremska. “Today, I felt a little nervous. I think I have good focus and I just try to show my best performance.”
“I know I could have played a lot better, but I still thought it was a good match and I really enjoyed the match.”
In the second round of the Australian Open, Dayana Yastremska will meet French tennis player Varvara Gracheva who beat Belgian tennis player Yanina Wickmayer 6-3, 6-4.
Yastremska’s compatriot Elina Svitolina snatched six straight games from 2-1 in the first set to beat 18-year-old Taylah Preston 6-2, 6-2.
“I feel happy to be back. Happy to win the first round here. I’m just happy with the way I started the Australian Open in general. “Of course it wasn’t easy at the start of the match, but then I played quite solidly, so I feel happy with today’s win,” said Svitolina.
Standing between 19th seed Svitolina and a third round was Bulgarian Viktoriya Tomova who silenced American Kayla Day 6-4, 6-2.
