Manchester United were beaten 3-0 at home by Newcastle United in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup as their poor start to the season turned for the worse on Thursday.
Manchester United coach Erik ten Hag looked shocked on the touchline as his team were booed off the pitch, and the Dutchman is under intense pressure following Sunday’s 3-0 home defeat to Manchester City.
“We know this is not good enough,” Ten Hag told Sky Sports.
“We have to take responsibility for that, I have to take responsibility for that. We didn’t give a good performance, I feel sorry for the fans.”
In a repeat of this year’s final at Wembley, which Manchester United won 2-0, Newcastle led 2-0 at half-time thanks to goals from Miguel Almiron and Lewis Hall before extending their lead through Joe Willock to progress to the quarter-finals.
Newcastle took the lead when Almiron scored in the 28th minute after Tino Livramento grabbed the ball and teed up the Paraguayan to slot the ball past goalkeeper Andre Onana with a sliding finish.
Hall doubled the lead eight minutes later, volleying into the far corner after a poor clearance and the agony continued for the home crowd when Willock cut through the defense and drilled his shot into the bottom corner in the 60th minute.
“I think the spirit of the group showed in the performance, the togetherness, the unity,” Magpies manager Eddie Howe said.
“It’s a very difficult place to get to and to score the goals we did in the moments we did and the way he performed really pleased me.”
Manchester United have lost eight of their last 15 matches in all competitions which is their worst record since 1972.
West Ham United eliminated Arsenal with a 3-1 victory thanks to goals from Mohammed Kudus and Jarrod Bowen and an own goal from defender Ben White at the London Stadium.
Martin Odegaard pulled one back in the 96th minute but it was too late for the visitors to make any comeback.
Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez scored to help nine-time champions Liverpool win 2-1 at Bournemouth. Nunez’s goal was his third in his last three games with the Reds.
Chelsea beat Blackburn Rovers 2-0, Everton brushed aside Burnley 3-0 while Fulham beat Championship League club Ipswich Town 3-1.
Third-division club Port Vale, who beat Mansfield Town early yesterday morning, are the lowest-ranked side remaining in contention.
Championship League club Middlesbrough also qualified for the last eight after a 3-2 win over Exeter City
