Edinson Cavani has reportedly informed Manchester United he wants to join Barcelona, and talks over his move are said to be advanced.
The Uruguayan striker is now on Barca’s radar and he can move to the Camp Nou on his own terms. Cavani will be a free agent in June 2022.
This will be a very exciting opportunity for Cavani’s career. He has never played in La Liga and he would love to play in one of the best leagues in the world, having experienced Serie A, Ligue 1 and the Premier League.
Barcelona’s difficult financial situation makes Cavani a realistic target for the Catalans. The Uruguayan is a reliable and experienced goalscorer who would be available either cheaply in January, as he is in the final year of his contract, or as a free agent in the summer.
The January transfer window promises to be intriguing for Barcelona. CEO Ferran Reverter confirmed at a press conference on Wednesday December 1 that the club are in a position to sign.
Manager Mateo Alemany previously said there was “no possibility” of the club calling in players as it stands, but Reverter was much more optimistic, as Marca reported. He said: “There is no doubt that Barcelona will sign or be able to sign [players] in January and summer,” he said.
However, president Joan Laporta has since warned that the club will have to offload players first, as reported by Catalunya Radio. He explained: “We have to sell players to be able to sign.”
Signing an attacking player seems like a priority. Barcelona lost Sergio Aguero for three months due to a heart problem and there are doubts whether the Argentine will be able to continue his career.
Cavani understands that he can still play a lot of football matches in his career and has played 39 games in his first season at the club. In those appearances, he scored 17 goals.
