Philadelphia 76ers coach Nick Nurse expected star center Joel Embiid to return soon and bolster their playoff push.
Embiid has been sidelined for nearly two months due to a knee injury. The 76ers have struggled in his absence but remain in contention for a playoff spot, aiming to avoid the Eastern Conference play-in tournament.
Sixers coach provided updates on injuries before their game against the Clippers on Wednesday. He also addressed the status of De’Anthony Melton and Robert Covington, who are both out long-term.
“Well, I would say there is a very likely chance that Joel Embiid will return to games before a play-in or playoff situation ,” Nurse said.
“I’m also confident that we can bring Melton and Covington in by the end of the year.”
“I feel that Robert’s situation, at this moment, is closer. But we want to have all three before the end of the regular season.” Nurse added.
Embiid’s knee injury on January 30th against the Golden State Warriors. The All-Star center has been sidelined ever since.
The team’s recent performance has been underwhelming. After winning only 10 out of their last 26 games, they’ve slipped to eighth place and are now a game and a half behind the Indiana Pacers for a playoff spot.
Nurse said he’s been communicating with Embiid, particularly after their recent West Coast road trip.
Embiid has been staying active on the court to support his teammates and get back into game shape.
“While Embiid has missed recent games, he’s remained a strong teammate by supporting his colleagues.” Nurse said.
“He’s actively preparing for his return, and we hope to see him back on the court soon.” he added.
Nurse has admitted that despite injuries, he won’t limit the returning athletes’ roles. He also provided details on De’Anthony Melton and Robert Covington’s situations.
