Khabib Nurmagomedov decided to retire from UFC and MMA at the request of his mother. Khabib did not want to worry his mother after the death of his father, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov.
The decision to resign from the UFC and MMA was taken by Khabib after defeating Justin Gaethje at UFC 254 which was held at Fight Island, Abu Dhabi, Sunday (25/10).
After the big battle, Khabib explained the reason for putting gloves on the octagon canvas. According to Khabib, he resigned because of his mother.
“When the UFC called me with Justin [Gaethje], I talked to my mother for three days,” Khabib said after the match.
“I promised him this would be my last fight. I have to keep my promise. This is the last fight,” he continued.
However, not many people know about Khabib’s mother. So far, the one who has appeared in the media more often is his late father, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov.
When mother was the reason for retiring, Khabib’s mother figure immediately became mysterious. Because, almost none of the Russian media have revealed about Khabib’s mother figure.
Quoted from Gol.ru, Khabib’s mother named Patimat Nurmagomedova. The name is the same as Khabib’s wife, Patimat, who later got the family last name The Eagle after marriage. However, Essentially Sports wrote Khabib’s mother named Fatima.
Khabib is the second child of Patimat and Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov who married in 1984. Apart from having an older brother, Magomed Nurmagomedov, Khabib also has a younger sister, Amina Nurmagomedov.
In the report, Patimat really wanted Khabib to explore education. Khabib has been in school since the age of 5.
“I am the minister of family agriculture. My mother and I have activities in the farm, vegetable garden and in the house itself,” said Khabib.
When Khabib was 10-12 years old, Abdulmanap realized that his second child had the talent to become an athlete. However, Patimat opposed this.
“Just leave my child, he needs to study, get an education,” said Patimat against Khabib becoming a wrestler.
The problem of Khabib having to prioritize education was also expressed by his teacher at school, Pariza Elendulaeva, who was told to Patimat. According to Pariza, Khabib often complained that he was overwhelmed by being an athlete.
“Mother is very attentive and polite to me,” said Khabib.
Patimat was not only concerned about Khabib, but she was also a generous mother to others. Together with Abdulmanap, Patimat often provides food for orphans.
Patimat did not like Khabib to become an MMA athlete. Quoted from TASS, Patimat never witnessed the Khabib fight.
“She [his mother] never watched Khabib’s fight. When the fight started on television, he left. I saw Khabib fighting,” Abdulmanap was quoted as saying by TASS.
“He went out into the courtyard and when there was silence during the break, he was worried, and when everyone was screaming he was sure Khabib was superior,” Abdulmanap added.
Patimat is one of the Khabib families who is always worried when The Eagle fights. Another example is the commotion that occurred with Conor McGregor after UFC 229 in October 2018.
After the commotion Khabib sent a voice message to Patimat, not wanting his mother to worry too much.
“Mom, I’m fine. Please don’t worry. Everything is fine. We have a champion belt. Everyone who is detained is released. I will be home soon, ma’am,” said Khabib.
Although Abdulmanap was discussed more in the media, Khabib said he was closer to his mother.
“We constantly talk about dad, dad, coach, dad, coach. Of course, dad is a person I always follow. He is always close and helps in everything,” said Khabib quoted from Sportsmanor.
“But I speak Russian and I think I need to tell mom. I will tell mom, I love you more than dad,” Khabib continued.
The victory over Gleison Tibau at UFC 148 or both UFC matches is a testament to Khabib’s love for his mother. Because the victory was dedicated to Patimat.
