History of England vs Italy Meeting Ahead of the Euro 2020 Final

The England national team will challenge the Italian national team in the final match of Euro 2020. Here is the history of the meeting of the two contestants in the final. The match between the two rivals will take place at Wembley Stadium, England, on Sunday (11/7/2021) local time.

The England national team secured a place in the final after beating the Danish national team 2-1 in extra time on Thursday (8/7/2021). The winning goals for the Three Lions came from own goals from Simon Kjaer (39′) and Harry Kane (104′). Denmark opened the scoring through Mikkel Damsgaard’s free shot (30′). England will head into the final to face Italy who won 4-2 on penalties against Spain the day before.

England actually has a bad record when it comes to meeting Italy in international tournaments. The last meeting between the two in an official tournament came in the 2014 World Cup Group D match. On 14 June 2014, Italy won 2-1 over the Three Lions thanks to goals from Claudio Marchisio and a Mario Balotelli header. England only managed to score one goal through Raheem Sterling.

The Three Lions have never even won over Italy in the World Cup or Europe. The record for the meetings between the two countries throughout history is as follows:
2014 World Cup: England vs Italy 1-2
Euro 2012: England vs Italy 0-0 (2-4 on penalties)
1990 World Cup: Italy vs England 2-1
European Cup 1980 : Italy vs England 1-0

England have not even beaten Italy in official international matches (not international friendlies) since the World Cup Qualifiers in November 1977. At that time, goals from Kevin Keegan and Trevor Brooking brought Ron Greenwood’s men to victory 2 -0 against an Italian team managed by legendary coach Enzo Bearzot. The Italian team in that match was strengthened by, among others, Dino Zoff, Giacinto Facchetti, Claudio Gentinle, Marco Tardelli, and Roberto Bettega.

Nonetheless, both have something in common in this Euro until they reach the top, which is completely invincible. Neither Italy nor England have ever tasted defeat in the group stage.

Three Lions, England’s nickname, even conceded only one goal from six matches that have been undertaken. In contrast to Italy, which has conceded three times from six matches at Euro 2020. The statistics that shown they have never lost and the small number of goals conceded makes England supporters optimistic that their proud team can win the Henry Delaunay trophy for the first time.

Hence, we’ll find out the result very soon, whether history will change or stay the same.
