Horn-Pacquiao fight to be re-scored after controversial decision

Horn-Pacquiao fight to be re-scored after controversial decision

The World Boxing Organisation will re-score the Horn-Pacquiao fight in wake of public backlash of the controversial unanimous decision to crown Australian Jeff Horn the winner.

The review will have no affect on the result and is a response from the WBO to claims from the Phillipines governement that the decision was unjust.

“The purpose of this review is to be able to give the fans certainty of who was the winner of the bout, even though we do not have the power to reverse the decision of the judges,” WBO President Francisco Valcarcel said in a letter.

At Suncorp Stadium the fight was scored 117-111 by Waleksa Roldan and 115-113 by both Chris Flores and Ramon Cerdan. Five new judges will be assigned to re-score the bout.

“Then, we will tabulate the results to ascertain clearly which rounds each fighter won using an average scale based on 60, 80 and 100 per cent,” Valcarcel said.

“This means that three of the five officials have to agree to determine which fighter won the round.”

Pacquiao has strongly called for a fair result of the fight after losing his welterweight belt.

“I love boxing and I don’t wanna see it dying because of unfair decision and officiating,” Pacquiao said in a statement.

“I had already accepted the decision but as a leader and, at the same time, fighter I have the moral obligation to uphold sportsmanship, truth and fairness in the eyes of the public.”
