Gervonta Davis (23-0-0, 22 KOs) in recent weeks has made several changes in his way of doing things as he is in full preparation for his fight with Leo Santa Cruz (39-2-1, 19 KOs) on October 24 on Showtime PPV.
The American Davis opted to hold his training camp in Las Vegas, so that he could be under the supervision of Floyd Mayweather Jr.
“I have to prepare as best I can, since I know Leo is going to bring a lot to the table. I want to be ready for Leo when the time comes. There are many things I can do with Floyd, and other things that I know I cannot do, since we are different fighters.” Davis said.
“While I’m sparring, if there’s something that I don’t understand, he’s going to come up to me to show me what he’s talking about. He is a great help to me in my camp right now. To be honest, he helps me even more than my coach now. He looked at Leo (Santa Cruz) and he told me what Leo likes to do in the ring.” Davis added.
Since the death of his uncle and trainer, Roger Mayweather, Mayweather Jr., has spent an enormous amount of time in his Gym in Las Vegas in recent months training the next generation of fighters, including Davis’ rival Devin Haney.
Mayweather instilled the value of discipline in Davis, working with him on his conditioning. This way Davis won’t have to lose too much weight during fight week.
Davis is well known for having had problems with weight at the weigh-in. Now he’s doing everything in his power to avoid getting into trouble in what will be his biggest fight so far against Santa Cruz.
Davis struggled to make the 135lb weight limit in his last fight against Yuriorkis Gamboa. However, the fight with Santa Cruz will be done at the weight limit of 130 lbs.
“I’m definitely going to make the weight for the fight with Leo Santa Cruz. My life depends on it! I will be the weight! I am going to make weight on my first attempt.” Davis said.
