Djokovic Chasing His Fourth US Open Title

Novak Djokovic quietly won his third round at the expense of the German Jan-Lennard Struff on 6-3, 6-3, 6-1 in one hour 43 minutes, in the 2020 US Open on Friday.

It marked the 26th straight victory for the Serbian this season. Djokovic is gaining momentum: he did not concede any service, but he converted five break points and dictated his rule on the game. On Sunday, he will face the Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta.

“It was a very good performances for my side and I managed to read his serve well. The second and third sets was really a great feeling on the court.” Djokovic said.

“I’ve been playing well the past couple of weeks, training well, focusing on the right things, maintaining that level of performance and hoping for the best. I’m feeling confident about my game and taking that  to every match I play.” Djokovic added.

Meanwhile, in doubles, Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen (won their ticket to the quarterfinals of the men’s doubles. They eliminated in the second round the pair made up of Australian John Peers and New Zealander Michael Venus on a 6-4 double and in one hour 14 minutes of play. They thus equal their performance achieved at Roland -Garros in 2019 their best result so far in Grand Slam.

On the women’s side, Elise Mertens won on 6-3, 7-5 over Spain’s Sara Sorribes Tormo , the match was interrupted by rain the day before when she was leading 6-3, 1-0.

This is the third year in a row that Mertens has found herself in the third round at the US Open, where her best result was an accession to the quarter-finals, in 2019.

Naomi Osaka, 2018 winner, was pushed to the limit by the young Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk who played her luck before giving up 6-3, 6-7 (4/7), 6-2 in two hours 33 minutes.

The Japanese dominated the first set but in the second, she lost the thread of her game and showed signs of nervousness while her opponent, full of passion, took all the risks and snatched the second set from the tie break.
