Indonesian U23 National Team coach Shin Tae Yong revealed his plans before retiring, namely to return to coaching the South Korean national team.
This was revealed by Shin Tae Yong in an interview with South Korean media after bringing Indonesia through to the semifinals of the 2024 U23 Asian Cup.
The coach from South Korea exceeded many people's expectations. In fact, the highest parent football organization in the country, namely PSSI, only set a target for the U23 Indonesian National Team to qualify for the quarter finals of the 2024 U23 Asian Cup.
The 53 year old coach admitted that he was both happy and sad after bringing the Indonesian U23 National Team to beat Korea. Shin Tae Yong said his dream was to return to coaching the South Korean national team.
"I am sad and sorry for ruining Korea's record of qualifying for the Olympics. My dream is to bring Indonesian football to the World Cup. If we qualify for the third round, that target will be closer."
"The ultimate dream is to return to South Korea and challenge again with the South Korean national team," said Shin Tae Yong.
Shin Tae Yong's sadness occurred because he was the person who caused the South Korean U23 national team to fail to play in the Olympics for the first time in 36 years.
Shin Tae Yong has a lot of experience coaching the South Korean national team, from the senior team, U23 to U20. Most recently, Shin Tae Yong coached the South Korean national team at the 2022 World Cup.
However, for now Shin Tae Yong's focus is with the Indonesian National Team. Shin Tae Yong even confirmed that he would immediately extend his contract with PSSI.
"I haven't signed the contract yet. I have had good talks with the President of PSSI [Erick]. I think I will extend the contract," said Shin Tae Yong.
Shin Tae Yong has the opportunity to create another new history, namely bringing the U23 Indonesian National Team to play in the Olympics.
After this, the U23 Indonesian National Team will face the 2018 U23 Asian Cup champions, Uzbekistan, Monday (29/4). Victory means the U23 Indonesian National Team won a ticket to qualify for the 2024 Olympics.
