Full-back Joao Canceloon Tuesday has signed a new contract extension with Manchester City. However, the Portuguese star admitted he was “not really happy” when he came to City from Juventus in 2019.
“In my first few months, I was not very happy with the decision to join Manchester City I come from a club that I also love, Juventus.” Cancelo said.
“I talked to my girlfriend and we agreed that I have to do my best to be able to compete. From December to January on, I started playing regularly and became a happier player.” Cancelo added.
The 27-year-old defender extended his contract for another two years, keeping him at the Etihad Stadium until at least 2027.
Under City’s manager Pep Guardiola, the Portugal international has built his performance as one of the most accomplished full-backs in Europe.
Cancelo not only has to make efforts but also accepts the disadvantage of having to force himself to play at left-back position.
Through 30 appearances in all competitions this season, which is roughly equal to the total number of appearances in the whole new season (33 games), it is clear the integration and progress that Cancelo is having at the moment.
Cancelo opened up about the impact of fellows Bernardo Silva and Ruben Dias in helping him during his time at City.
“Since I arrived, Bernardo Silva has been a great friend. wonderful and a great support for me, for my whole family.” Cancelo said.
“I have known him for a long time, we have built a great relationship since we were young. He has helped me a lot here.
“Also, I know Ruben Dias from Benfica, but not as much as I know Bernardo. Bernardo is from my generation. Ruben Dias also helped me a lot. Both are very calm people so they also put me at ease.” he added.
