Johann Zarco’s Transition to Honda, A Brief Glimpse of Promise in 2019

Johann Zarco, a name synonymous with tenacity and speed in the MotoGP world, left an indelible mark when he briefly joined the Honda team for a three-race stint in 2019. This experience, however short, left him with a positive impression of the Honda machine.

As Zarco prepares for his upcoming switch to LCR Honda in the 2024 MotoGP season, his initial encounter with the Honda bike holds significance in assessing the potential of this new chapter in his career.

In 2019, Zarco found himself at a crossroads after a challenging period with the KTM factory team.

In a surprise move, he was given the opportunity to replace the injured Takaaki Nakagami in the LCR Honda squad for three races: the Misano Grand Prix, the Aragon Grand Prix, and the Thailand Grand Prix.

While the stint was brief, it provided a valuable insight into the capabilities of the Honda bike and its compatibility with Zarco’s riding style.

During those three races, Zarco displayed an impressive level of adaptability and comfort on the Honda machine. He noted that he “got a good feeling on the Honda,” praising its responsiveness and the connection he felt with the bike.

“I’m sure they have the power to invest in the need to find a solution, and I will be proud if I can find a way with them,” he said.

Fast forward to 2024, and Zarco is set to embark on a new journey with the LCR Honda team. The move reflects a pivotal moment in his career, and the positive experience from his 2019 stint could serve as a foundation for his aspirations with the team.

While each season brings its unique challenges and opportunities, Zarco’s familiarity with the Honda bike may offer him a head start in adjusting to his new surroundings.

The Honda brand has an illustrious history in MotoGP, boasting numerous championships and a reputation for building powerful and agile machines. However, it’s worth noting that riding a Honda bike requires a unique skill set due to its aggressive nature.

Riders must master its responsive throttle and adapt their riding style accordingly. Zarco’s ability to find a connection with the bike in his brief time with the team could prove advantageous as he integrates into LCR Honda.
