Jorginho Passed the Former French National Team Record

Jorginho made an extraordinary achievement when he helped the Italian national team win the 2020 European Cup trophy. He set a record by passing a number of legendary players.

Playing at Wembley Stadium, London, Monday (12/7/2021), Jorginho was revealed from the start by the Italian national team coach, Roberto Mancini. Jorginho’s stunning performance made the Azzurri midfield dominant for most of the match.

Jorginho is also good at intercepting. Squawka notes, he made 25 interceptions. The number is a new record for the player who made the most interceptions in the European Cup. Jorginho’s interceptions surpassed the number of interceptions of former France international Marcel Desailly at the 1996 European Cup.

Another record, in Opta’s records, is Jorginho becoming the fifth Italian player to appear in the final of the Champions League and major international tournament (European Cup or World Cup) in the same season. A similar nick occurred 27 years ago, namely 1994.

Jorginho is one level above the four Italian legends, namely Daniele Massaro, Paolo Maldini, Demetrio Albertini and Roberto Donadoni. They are members of the Italian national team and AC Milan.

In the Champions League, they won the title after beating Barcelona with a score of 4-0. However, unfortunately they failed to get a similar result in the 1994 Brazil World Cup, after losing on penalties to Brazil.

Jorginho repeated a similar trend this year with Italy and Chelsea. Even the 29-year-old player can be said to be better because he won in both events.

With Chelsea, the former Napoli midfielder helped Chelsea win the match until the final. In the top part, Chelsea won with a score of 1-0 over Manchester City.

Then in the Euro 2020 final, Italy met England. England took the lead through Luke Shaw in the second minute. Italy equalized through Leonardo Bonucci which made the score 1-1, which lasted until normal time and extra time.

During the penalty shootout Jorginho failed to do his job well. However, Gianluigi Donnarumma’s brilliant action, thwarting England’s three kickers, made Italy win on penalties with a score of 3-2, and come out as European Cup 2020 champions.
