Krack: Aston Martin’s made ‘Wrong choices’

Krack on Aston Martin problems

Mike Krack, Aston Martin Formula 1 team principal, conceded to wrong choices which led to its recent drop on the grid. He believes that recent developments and setup of the car has contributed to it.

The Silverstone based team started this season with most promising competitor of Red Bull. The team managed to take six out of ten podiums.

However, its performance dropped down to midfield after second position of the Spaniard at Canadian Grand Prix. Ferrari and Mercedes has ramped up its performance to replace the McLaren.

The performance profile changed drastically as it could not cope up with Red Bull in low speed corners. It leaves the room wide open for the championship leading team in the low speed circuits.

Alonso blamed the new tyre specifications from the British Grand Prix. However, the senior management at the team does not weight in on tyres.

Krack conceded that a combination of car set-up & up-gradation has triggered the change in the car behavior.

“The way we have developed the car, it’s very complex,” he said.

“You change one thing, but you never change one thing and everything else is fine. You always have side effects when you do changes.

“And you need to weigh up: do you use, for example, a part that makes more downforce but has a different character, or vice versa. And we think that in one or two situations we have done not the right choice.”

Krack further added that team is working on further upgrades to address the unintended results. He also showed optimism regarding the possibility of finding a solution.

“We are very confident,” he said. “It took us now a couple of weeks to identify what the issues are, and also confirm them.

“You go to one event, you have issues, you go to another one, they are a little bit different, and then you don’t know. So, you have always to wait a little bit not to take a direction.

“You could just put parts on the car for the sake of putting parts on the car. This is not what we want to do.

“But we are quite confident that what we can do over the next races will give us the improvements.”
