LaLiga Santander Results: Suarez Bring Atletico Beat Barcelona

Atletico Madrid won 2-0 over Barcelona in the eighth week of the LaLiga Santander at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium, Saturday (2/10). Striker Luis Suarez scored one goal in Atletico’s win over the Blaugrana.

Barcelona did play dominantly, but their attacks were almost non-existent which was so dangerous for the hosts. They even got 71 percent possession of the ball compared to Atletico Madrid’s 29 percent possession.

Unfortunately, from nine shots, coach Ronald Koeman’s team could only shoot 2 times on target. Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid, who relied on quick counter-attacks, had six shots, three of which were on target and two ended in goals.

Atletico took the lead in the 23rd minute through winger Thomas Lemar. Lemar’s goal was created in an attractive way.

Starting from the acceleration of Joao Fekix from the left side. The Portuguese player carried the ball into the middle before it was passed to Luis Suarez.

Suarez then provided a through ball to Lemar. After dribbling into the penalty box, Lemar fired a left foot shot into the left corner of the Barcelona goal which was guarded by Marc-Andre Ter Stegen.

Towards the end of the first half, Los Rojiblancos increased their lead to 2-0 through a goal from former Barcelona player, Luis Suarez.

Suarez and Lemar showed good cooperation again when playing Atletico’s counter-attack. Lemar released a cross breakthrough bait that could be controlled well by Suarez.

After controlling the ball, Suarez slightly pushed the ball in front of the Nerzzurri goal. Suarez’s golden opportunity to score a goal was not wasted.

When dealing with Ter Stegen, Suarez put the ball in the bottom right corner of the Barcelona goal. The goal brought Atletico 2-0 up in the first half.

Despite being involved in Atletico’s two goals against Barcelona in that match, Suarez seemed to choose not to celebrate excessively after breaking into the team he played for.

Philippe Coutinho threw Barcelona’s chance to reduce the position in the 60th minute. After dealing one on one with goalkeeper Jan Oblak, Coutinho’s efforts could be thwarted by the opposing goalkeeper.

In the 66th minute Joao Felix did not want to lose in registering his name on the scoreboard. However, Felix’s kick could still be anticipated by goalkeeper Ter Stegen.

Host Atletico finally picked up three points after referee Cesar Soto blew the long whistle signaling the game was over. Atletico won 2-0 over Barcelona.

The defeat to Atletico puts Barcelona in ninth place in the Spanish League standings. Barcelona has now only won one win in the last five matches, with the last two games losing.
