Leclerc feels dejected for Vettel’s prioritization

Leclerc vs Vettel at Marina

Charles Leclerc, Ferrari’s young star, feels dejected after loosing the opportunity to win third straight grand prix for Ferrari.

He fell behind his team mate Sebastian Vettel, who was able to win Singapore Grand Prix, after an “unfair” decision by Ferrari Formula 1 team.

Leclerc made to pole position during qualifying session on Marina Bay Circuit. He led the opening phase but eventually slowed down to enhance the tyres life for remaining race.

Ferrari chose to pit four time world champion Vettel a lap earlier than Leclerc.

Vettel had been running on third behind Hamilton, when he took on fresh tyres. The new rubber provided him with the leverage of running faster and to gain the top position.

Leclerc was unhappy how he lost his position to his team mate. He spoke over the radio during first safety car to show his concern regarding what had happened.

However, team asked him to ‘keep his head down’ and focus on track.

He responded to the request, “My head is down and it will be down until the race [is done] – I just want to let you know my feelings.

“To be completely honest with you, I don’t understand the undercut – but we will discuss after the race.”

Leclerc and team radioed during second safety car period. Team had asked him to look after his engine. The instruction killed his bid to take over his team mate for victory.

He responded: “Yep. I won’t do anything stupid. It is not my goal. I want us to finish one-two. I just don’t think it is fair. But I won’t do anything stupid.”

Leclerc to discuss with Ferrari

Leclerc reiterated his point even after the race. He was willing to let go of it for now as the team had finished one-two for the first time in season. But the point would be discussed later with the team.

“Obviously it is always difficult to lose a win like that, but in the end it is one-two for the team so I am happy for that,” he said.

“It is our first one-two of the season, and all the guys deserve it.

“We arrived here hoping for a podium and we come back with a one-two so I am happy.

“I am disappointed on my side as anyone would be. Sometimes it goes that way, but I will come back stronger.”

Strategy lies with team

Vettel responded to questions that the strategy calls are made by team.

“I think just the corner before, Turn 21, so the last turn before the pit entry, I received the call,” he said.

“I don’t know if someone pitted for me [to trigger it], but it worked today so I am happy.”
